Chile quake moved Earth's axis, shortened days: scientist

WASHINGTON (AFP) - – The powerful earthquake that shook Chile on Saturday probably shifted the Earth's axis and made days slightly shorter, a NASA scientist said.
Richard Gross, a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, calculated that the planet's axis would have shifted by eight centimeters (three inches) during the 8.8 magnitude quake, NASA said in a statement.
Earth days are 24 hours long because that's the amount of time it takes the planet to make one full rotation on its axis, so shifting the axis would affect rotation.
If, indeed, the planet's axis did shift by eight centimeters during the Chilean quake, days would have shortened by 1.26 microseconds, Gross calculated.
A microsecond is one-millionth of a second, so no need to adjust watches just yet.
The Chilean quake shifted the Earth's axis by even more than the 9.1-magnitude temblor off Indonesia that set off the deadly tsunami in Asia in 2004, Gross worked out.
That's partly because the faultline responsible for the earthquake in Chile "dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004 Sumatran earthquake" and is more effective at moving Earth's mass vertically and shifting the planet's axis.
The 2004 quake in Asia caused the Earth to move by around seven centimeters and chopped an estimated 6.8 microseconds off the length of a day, NASA said.

Thanks for all the members who participated in the OC 2010. You guys did a GREAT job!!!

Just to clarify some doubts you may have regarding how we selected people to go for OC. We selected the people who matched the following selection criteria. They must be in Sec3 or Sec4.Must be a active member.Attire must be of good standard.Have contributed a lot to CareForce for the year.Well,there are too many criteria to name. But these are just a few to name.

Therefore, remember to turn up for sessions regularly and potray a good image of yourself starting from now on so that you would be selected by the next EXCO to go OC.As the EXCO, we suppose the selection criteria might become even stricter for the next OC, so do work hard for this opportunity. But, we need to emphasis that being selected to go OC is a bonus/reward for you, dun carry too much hopes that you will be definitely selected just because you are very very active for the year.There might be unforseen circumstances that might cause you to lose the chance.We hope to seek your understanding to not blame the next EXCO if you are not selected for OC 2011 though you put in a lot of hardwork for the year 2010.

Once again, I would wish to thank all who volunteered in the Mid Autumn Celebration. The breakthroughs would not be possible without your everlasting efforts and support. Thank you very much!

I am here to update all on a upcoming event during the holidays. CareForce will be participating in the Open House 2009(Tentative date: 28th November 2009). This chance is open for all members of CareForce.

We will be conducting school tour, where we will bring visitors around the school to introduce them the facilities being put in place to facilitate teaching and learning processes. You need not worry, trainings will be conducted to ensure all volunteers are of presentable standards and equipped with the skills to deal with unforeseen circumstances. It is going to be a fun and rewarding experience!

Due to large volume of visitors, we need a lot of helpers. Thus, please persuade your friends who are also in CareForce to volunteer in this annual event.Arrangements and discussions are still going on. Keep a lookout and make yourself free on that day!

hello ! i have a few tips for the upcoming EOYs that everyone seemed to be so stressed up by:
1)get at least 6-7 hours of sleep
2)dont skip meals and drink plenty of water
3)only revise with others if you can not get distracted or start chatting
4)i know this one is hard but avoid using computer unless necessary
5) avoid listening music with lyrics while study be cause it will be harder for you to think (instumental ones will be good though, they will calm you down)

Tips for Chionging Homework

HI everybody!

How's your holidays? Had fun? Or stressing over that pile of homework on your desk?
Anyway, June Holiday is soon coming to an end, which also marks the beginning of another term.

Here are some personal tips to help you if you need to chiong homework.

Sort up your Homework, make sure you so not leave out any homework.
Coffee/Tea/Red Bull/Essence of Chicken can help to keep you awake for burning midnight oil.(dun drink too much hoh, will harm body de.)
Listen to the radio or some music.(will work for some people)
If you have eyebags due to stay up late in the night, you can try put 2 metal spoons in the fridge untill they turn cold and put them under your eyes. This will help to 提神 too!~
Burn some essential oil in the diffuser, try these: Lemon, Peppermint, Rosemary, Lavender, Sandal wood, Jasmine.
Drink plenty of water/cooling tea, coz 晚睡的话,身体会燥热.
Mueslli bars can be your healthier choice supper/snack if you feel hungry in the night.(I eat that for breakfast and sometime as snacks)
Sleep early on Sunday, Monday will be a very tiring day.
